AI as a Window into Student Understanding

What do your students actually know right now? Not at the end of term when grades are submitted, but this week, as they work through new material?
For most professors, this question is surprisingly difficult to answer. We observe students in lectures, but attention is not the same as comprehension. We grade problem sets, but often record only whether answers are right or wrong, not the reasoning that produced them. Office hours provide insight, but only into the subset of students confident enough to show up and articulate their confusion. Exams offer snapshots, but by the time results arrive, we've moved on to new topics. The fundamental pedagogical challenge is that student understanding remains largely invisible until it's too late to intervene.
